A mass has been held to remember the 10 youth players that died in a fire at Flamengo football club's training ground on Friday

A mass has been held in Rio de Janeiro to remember the 10 boys killed in a fire at Flamengo football club's training centre on Friday.

The blaze took hold of the dormitory of the club's academy on Friday morning, with firefighters called to the scene just after 5am local time.

Lieutenant colonel of the fire brigade Douglas Henaut told Globo News: "The kids from the Flamengo youth team were sleeping there at the time."

The cause of the fire is unknown and authorities are investigating.

Flamengo's training centre was expanded and reopened just two months at a cost of £4.8m.

Players from around the world expressed their shock and sadness at the deaths. Vinicius Junior, the Real Madrid forward signed from Flamengo last year, tweeted: "Just remembering the nights and days I spent, it's creepy.

"Still without believing, but in prayer for all! God bless everyone's family!"

Flamengo are one of Brazil's most successful clubs, with five league titles and a Copa Libertadores - the South American equivalent of the Champions League - to their name.
