WATCH: Josef Martinez's ridiculous penalty for Atlanta United

Atlanta beat New York City FC to reach MLS play-off finals for the first time

Josef Martinez scored a ridiculous penalty in Atlanta’s win over New York City, which was described as ‘comical but effective’ by the match commentator

Josef Martinez inspired Atlanta United into the MLS play-off finals with a two-goal cameo against New York City FC.

It was a memorable night for the MLS franchise as they reached the finals for the very first time, but there is a good chance their opening goal will live longer in the memory.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Atlanta won a penalty inside 25 minutes at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Up stepped Martinez for the pressure penalty but the Venezuelan was unaffected as he uniquely slotted the ball home.

Martinez hoped, skipped and jumped his way forward before firing the ball past Sean Johnson in the New York goal.

The outrageous effort was described as "comical but effective" by the match commentator, and effective it proved as it laid the foundation for Atlanta to progress.
