Alexandre Lacazette: How new Arsenal signing impressed in pre-season cameo

Alexandre Lacazette scored on his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt but his pre-season cameo suggests he will bring more than just goals.

The club's record £52m signing came on in the 68th minute of Arsenal's opening pre-season friendly win against Sydney and thrilled large swathes of an 80,000-strong crowd - as well as onlooking boss Arsene Wenger, Gunners back home and even compatriot Antoine Griezmann - as he scored his first goal for the club just 15 minutes later.

Making a late dart into the box as Alex Iwobi looked up, the man who scored 37 goals in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side last season, swept home first-time to open his account in new colours.

Arsenal fans will hope the no-fuss finish is a taste of what is come but a glimpse of his all-round game, albeit against modest opposition, was tantalising, too.

Lacazette - one of 10 changes Wenger made midway through the second half - has been used in a variety of roles over the years including wide forward and support striker, and here he was deployed on the left of a fresh frontline that Olivier Giroud speared, with Iwobi to the other side.

The new boy trained with his Gunners team-mates for the first time on Tuesday but - roared onto the pitch by excited supporters - he looked sharp and eager on his maiden outing, his first touch a positive one as he played a ball wide to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

He was soon dropping deep, hustling Sydney's blue shirts in a bid to regain possession and link up play, but for all his athleticism, there were moments of guile, too.

Just five minutes and a couple of tidy lay-offs after coming on, he showed quick feet and awareness to swivel and play a weighted pass for another substitute, Donyell Malen, inside the box.

That chance was spurned but soon he afforded Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain another, this time with a flash of skill as close control and a quick stepover drew a foul on the edge of the area.

So far, so competent, but the man who had helped swell the gate for Arsenal's first trip to Australia in 40 years then had his moment to remember.

It might have been a simple finish but the timing of a run from the halfway line, the confidence of the connection and the hearty celebrations with his new team-mates will have pleased his manager.

"It is important for him to get that (first goal) off his shoulders because you expect to score if you are a striker," Wenger later told reporters.

"You could see that he was happy but overall what we were looking for was to play at pace and to develop our collective game."

It was only a run-out against opponents who barely got out of their own half but one that will have boosted morale as well as his match legs, with higher-profile games against Bayern Munich and Chelsea looming.

Arsenal have needed a main man who can do much more for the team than just find the net and the signs in Sydney were promising. Gunners fans will hope to soon see him lead the line from the off.
