Southampton v Crystal Palace preview: Sam Allardyce facing defensive decisions

Watch a preview of Wednesday’s Premier League games, including Arsenal v West Ham and Chelsea v Manchester City

Sam Allardyce will have some tough defensive decisions to make as Crystal Palace travel to Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday.

The Eagles boss will be without three regulars in his back line, with Patrick Van Aanholt and James Tomkins certain omissions for the trip to St Mary's, while Scott Dann could miss the rest of the season.

It means Allardyce will need another defensive reshuffle to maintain Crystal Palace's run of four straight Premier League victories, including a stunning win against table toppers Chelsea on Saturday.

Southampton are just three points ahead of their weekend opponents although they have lost just one of their last 13 home league meetings with the Eagles, winning the last five.

It could help the Saints to get their form back on track at St Mary's with just one win in their last five Premier League outings on home turf.

Opta stats

After failing to win any of their first 12 Premier League games against Southampton, the Eagles have won two of their last three against them, though both wins have come at Selhurst Park.

Sam Allardyce has never lost a Premier League game at St Mary's Stadium, though six of his eight visits there have ended level (W2).

Southampton haven't lost both league games in a season against Crystal Palace since 1990-91, when the Eagles finished third in the old First Division.

Of teams Southampton have faced 10 or more times in the Premier League, their joint-highest win percentage is against Crystal Palace (60 per cent, level with Swansea).

Crystal Palace have won their last four Premier League games; they've only won five in a row in the competition on two other occasions (April 2014 and December 1992).

Sam Allardyce hasn't won five consecutive matches in the Premier League as a manager since December 2006 while in charge of Bolton Wanderers.

Crystal Palace have won all four of their Premier League games in which Mamadou Sakho has played, keeping three clean sheets in the process.

Wilfried Zaha has been directly involved in 13 Premier League goals this season (six goals, seven assists); three more than in his previous three top-flight campaigns combined (six goals, four assists).

Merson's prediction

I'm going to go Palace here. They've got some really, really tough fixtures coming up, and they need to win this. They have the hardest run-in, so they need to get a gap between them and the bottom three.

If they win this, I think they'll be OK. Because then, Sam Allardyce can set his side up not to lose against the big teams.

Zaha’s impressive form at Crystal Palace and his future were discussed on the Sunday Supplement

You don't want to go into those games against the bigger teams needing to win. He's the best in the business at getting draws against those big teams.
