FA Cup third-round weekend is an English football tradition but that did not stop managers from making major changes to their teams.

Two teams even swapped their entire line-up from the last league meeting, while Manchester United made nine changes for their 4-0 win over Reading.

It worked for Jose Mourinho but not everyone got away with it - Eddie Howe paying the price for Bournemouth's 11 changes, losing 3-0 at unchanged Millwall.

It was not only Premier League teams who rested players. Championship leaders Brighton also made 11 changes, but still saw off MK Dons.

The 16 top-flight teams in action averaged almost five changes each, while Championship outfits averaged a little over four switches per side.

Teams from League One and lower averaged nearer two changes each and Millwall weren't the only ones to see the continuity pay off.

Unchanged Oxford won at Rotherham, while non-league Lincoln took advantage of the five changes made by Ipswich, drawing 2-2 and coming within minutes of victory.
