Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and Dimitri Payet among names on FIFA shortlist

Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and Dimitri Payet are among the 23 players shortlisted for the FIFA men's player of the year award.

There are 10 players from the Premier League nominated for the prize, which has been set up this year after FIFA's split from France Football and the Ballon d'Or.

Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, N'Golo Kanté, Alexis Sánchez and Mesut Özil make up the remaining representation from the Premier League.

La Liga also has 10 players on the shortlist, including Barcelona's Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luis Suárez, and Andrés Iniesta, while Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos of Real Madrid have also been nominated.

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann is the only La Liga nominee outside of the two Spanish giants.

Elsewhere, Juventus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon joins Bayern Munich and Germany shot-stopper Manuel Neuer on the list alongside Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski.

The winner of the award will be determined through a combined voting process, with 50 per cent of the decision based on the votes of captains and head coaches from national teams with the other 50 per cent split between an online public ballot and submissions from 200 media representatives.

FIFA will announce a three-man shortlist for the award on December 2.
