Champions Barcelona got off to a winning start by thrashing Real Betis 6-2 at the Nou Camp, with Uruguay forward Luis Suarez scoring a sensational hat-trick.
Meanwhile, Champions League holders Real Madrid also picked up three points in their first game of the season as a Gareth Bale double either side of half-time helped Los Blancos to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Real Sociedad at the Anoeta.
Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by newly promoted Alaves at the Vicente Calderon and UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla hit Espanyol for six, while also conceding four.
