A deluge of precipitation hit the Austin venue for the second successive day, but knowing the session could be used to form the grid if qualifying is abandoned, the 20 drivers braved the elements to post a time.
But with grip at a premium and aquaplaning a possibility at any moment, there were several slips, slides and incidents during the hours running.
