Lewis Hamilton believes his track record in Formula 1 proves he can take the title momentum back from Nico Rosberg and seal a fourth world championship.
Rosberg's three consecutive race wins following the summer break has resulted in a 27-point swing in the standings, with the German now holding the advantage over his Mercedes team-mate.
But as Formula 1 embarks on four races in five weeks, starting at this weekend's Malaysia GP, Hamilton is confident he can bounce back from another 2016 drought and retake the lead.
"We're both fiercely competitive," the three-time world champion said. "I have no idea if the momentum will swing back to me or when it might. But we still have six races left, so I just have to keep giving it my all and hope for the best.
"That's all you can do as a sportsman. It's going to take some good results to get back in front and stay there - but I've had plenty of those in the past, so there's no reason to think they won't come back to me again."
Hamilton endured a nightmare weekend in Singapore as he was dominated and outclassed by Rosberg, who will be eager to extend his winning run and match his early season four-race streak with a maiden victory in Sepang.
But Rosberg once again downplayed his form and highlighted the threat of Red Bull and last year's Malaysia winners Ferrari as he previewed Mercedes returning to their 'second home'.
"I've had a good run lately and I'm enjoying the moment," he said. "But as far as the next race goes, or the next one after that and so on... it's anyone's game.
"Red Bull and Ferrari are both pushing us really hard, so there will be some tough weekends ahead. It's exciting for the fans and pushes us even harder to keep improving, so that's a great thing.
"Malaysia didn't work out perfectly for us last year, so if we can win it this time against such tough opposition that would be really awesome."
The title battle certainly looks set for a thrilling conclusion, one that Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is excited to see out, adding: "This year more than ever, we've seen that they are pushing each other to new heights."
