Bahrain GP: How dramatic race unfolded as Lewis Hamilton wins

Sebastian Vettel spins after being passed by Lewis Hamilton for second place in the Bahrain GP.

The second race of the F1 2019 season was an absolute epic, with Lewis Hamilton stealing the victory off Charles Leclerc. Here's how it happened...

Lap 1: Vettel passes Leclerc off the line, with Bottas also overtaking the pole-sitting Ferrari. Stroll and Grosjean pick up damage.

Lap 2: Leclerc takes second place back off Bottas after a costly lock-up by the Finn, and he is then passed by team-mate Hamilton.

Lap 3: Sainz gets ahead of Magnussen into sixth and challenges Verstappen.

Lap 4: Sainz goes for a move...and collides with his former team-mate! Sainz picks up damage to his right front and has to pit in his McLaren.

Lap 5: "I'm quicker guys," says Leclerc as he enters DRS range of Vettel.

Lap 6: Leclerc, with DRS, overtakes Vettel around the outside of Turn One but Vettel nearly gets the place back at the next corner, with the Ferraris almost colliding.

Lap 8: Leclerc moves out of DRS range from Vettel, who is only a second ahead of Hamilton in third.

Lap 12: Max Verstappen is the first of the top five to pit, putting on the medium tyres.

Lap 13: Hamilton moves within DRS range of Vettel in their battle for second. Mercedes attempt to cover off Red Bull by pitting Bottas from fourth, but Verstappen is ahead!

Lap 14: Leclerc and Hamilton both come in for their first stops and Hamilton fits the softs, pointing to a two-stop strategy. But Martin Brundle points out that Ferrari have "sacrificed Vettel". Bottas gets back ahead of Verstappen for a net fourth

Lap 15: Ferrari bring in Vettel, but Mercedes' undercut works with Hamilton now ahead of the German. Ricciardo is third, splitting the two drivers, but has yet to stop.

Lap 20: Leclerc extends his race lead to over five seconds while Vettel cuts Hamilton's advantage in second to 1.5s

Lap 22: Vettel surges within DRS range of Hamilton's Mercedes. "I'm in big trouble," says world champion.

Lap 23: Vettel overtakes Hamilton around the outside of Turn Four to take second place back.

Lap 27: The youngest driver on the grid overtakes the oldest as Lando Norris gets past Kimi Raikkonen's Alfa Romeo for seventh place.

Lap 30: Hamilton is struggling on soft tyres and is now more than three seconds behind Vettel, while Leclerc has an eight-second advantage out in front.

Lap 34: Verstappen pits for second time, after Stroll unlaps himself by passing Red Bull.

Lap 35: Hamilton pits for his second stop, re-emerging on track in fourth and behind Bottas.

Lap 36: Ferrari respond by bringing in Vettel, but Hamilton is right on his tail. Both are on medium tyres.

Lap 37: Leclerc pits, with Bottas second but the Finn has yet to come in for his second stop.

Lap 38: Vettel and Hamilton battle for second place... and Vettel spins! The German sustains damage to his tyres and then front wing spectacularly flies off. He pits and is back out in ninth.

Lap 46: Leclerc reports problems with the power unit. "Something strange with the engine," he says.

Lap 47: Leclerc loses over a second a lap to Hamilton. Is the writing on the wall for the stricken Ferrari?

Lap 48: Hamilton breezes past the ailing Ferrari. The world champion is in the lead of the race.

Lap 54: Now Bottas gets ahead of Leclerc for second place. It's a Mercedes one-two.

Lap 55: DOUBLE DNF for Renault. Both Hulkenberg and Ricciardo suffer reliability failures on the same lap. They were running sixth and 10th before that. Safety Car deployed.

Lap 57: The race finishes under Safety Car conditions, which rescues Leclerc somewhat with Verstappen in the hunt. The luckless Ferrari driver finishes third behind race-winner Hamilton and Bottas
