Brazilian GP, Practice Three: Valtteri Bottas leads Mercedes one-two but Ferrari close in on rivals

Less than a tenth separates the top four drivers in final practice

By Matt Morlidge

Valtteri Bottas topped the timesheets in a fiercely competitive Practice Three at the Brazilian GP, as Ferrari closed in on Mercedes ahead of qualifying.

Although the session featured another one-two for the Silver Arrows, the top four drivers were separated by just five hundredths of a second in a practice outing that hinted at a fascinating shootout for pole later today - Qualifying is live on Sky F1 at 4pm.

Bottas posted a 1:09.281 to set the pace on supersoft tyres, the quickest time of the weekend so far, with Lewis Hamilton just 0.003seconds adrift of his team-mate following his perfect Friday.

But Ferrari's resurgence was certainly the major on-track talking point from P3, with Kimi Raikkonen third and just 0.045s behind Bottas' benchmark and Vettel a further 0.013s back.

However, while Ferrari look set to push Mercedes close in qualifying, Red Bull's hopes of making it a three-way fight appear to be fading.

Daniel Ricciardo was fifth and a second off Mercedes' pace, while Max Verstappen ended the hour all the way down in ninth after spinning as he struggled with understeer on his RB13.

Instead it was Fernando Alonso who occupied a surprise sixth place, with the Spaniard less than a tenth off the leading Red Bull. Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon occupied seventh and eighth for the consistent Force India.

Talk away from the track centred on an extraordinary row between Renault and Toro Rosso over engines and 'coincidences'.

Toro Rosso look set to struggle in qualifying, however, with Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley only able to finish 16th and 17th.

Both drivers are also expecting grid penalties this weekend, as is Lance Stroll after his Mercedes-powered Williams surprisingly ground to a halt early on in the session.

The Canadian is set to take both a gearbox and an engine penalty.
