Fernando Alonso says he is having open discussions with McLaren about their 2018 engine plans.

McLaren's partnership with Honda remains uncertain beyond the end of this season with the Woking team having evaluated possible alternatives for several months.

Alonso's own future at McLaren remains up in the air, with the Spaniard out of contract in December, but the 36-year-old has admitted he "didn't think a lot about the future" over F1's three-week summer break.

Nonetheless, Alonso says McLaren's management are keeping him in the loop about their engine situation.

"The engine is not really a key influencer. It is the performance what will dictate what I will do and the conditions of next year's proposal," he said when asked about his future on Thursday at the Belgian GP.

"The team have shared everything [about engine discussions] with me. I share with them all my thoughts and they share with me their thoughts and steps."

Speaking before the summer break, McLaren chief Eric Boullier suggested the team would ideally need to know by the end of September which engine they would be running in 2018.

Asked if McLaren had a tough choice to make over their 2018 power supplier, Alonso said: "I don't think there is any tough choice.

"They [Honda] are working day and night to improve the engine but it is difficult to predict what is going to happen in six or seven months' time and how much you can improve.

"I'm sure they will do the best job possible and they will improve as much as they can."

However, Alonso played down the impact an update to Honda's power unit was likely to have for this weekend's Belgian GP at Spa, describing it as "a very minor thing".

Meanwhile, having said for several months that he would begin to think about his F1 future in September, Alonso joked "I still have one more week of freedom!" - although insisted he will decide his 2018 plans "when I want, that's it".
