Nico Rosberg's Singapore weekend got off to a difficult start as he smashed into the barriers and destroyed his front wing during the first practice session on Friday.
The German, who is preparing for his 200th Grand Prix, made an uncharacteristic error before running into the wall on Turn 18 of the street circuit.
"That corner catches out somebody every year," said Sky F1 commentator David Croft of Rosberg, who was running fifth fastest during the practice session before the accident.
The German is just two points behind team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the drivers' standings following victories in the two races since the summer break at Spa and Monza.
