Jolyon Palmer v Esteban Ocon: The race for a 2017 seat at Renault

Palmer isn't worried but Ocon is "getting ready for next year"

By Matt Morlidge

Jolyon Palmer insists he is not worried about Esteban Ocon replacing him at Renault in 2017 - though the Frenchman gave another indication of his talents at in-season testing.

Reigning GP3 champion Ocon is contracted to Mercedes in the long term and impressed on both days at Silverstone in the W07, but a race seat at the Silver Arrows appears unlikely. He is currently reserve driver at Renault, however, and is targeting a full-time F1 drive next year - leaving Palmer, on a one-year contract, under threat.

But the Brit, whose best finish of 11th in his rookie F1 year came at the season-opening Australian GP, is refusing to pay attention to rumours that Ocon could be promoted.

"I'm not worried by Esteban," Palmer told Sky Sports News HQ. "I know him well, he's a member of the team so I'm not worried about my seat with him, I'm just focused on what I'm doing.

"To be honest I'm focused on getting the car better, because I think if we can improve the car then there's a better chance to show what I can do, especially if we can be in Q2 or fighting for points.

"Then that's a real chance to show I can score and race well against the best, because at the moment it's harder than it could be. I'm not fussed about anyone else."

Kevin Magnussen's future with the French manufacturer is also unclear but the Dane has consistently outperformed Palmer, also earning Renault's only points of the season. The former world champions want to return to the top and Magnussen, who is already urging the team to concentrate on 2017, seems a natural fit as they seek quick progression.

Ocon, meanwhile, has nationality on his side and has F1 test experience with Lotus and Force India, as well as two practice sessions for Renault. His 2016 DTM campaign with Mercedes hasn't distracted him from his ultimate goal.

"The boss will decide what they want at Renault," the 19-year-old said. "I'm getting ready for next year, but it's still early to speak about that. I still have outings in FP1 to do. I have to focus there and not on next year.

"I'm ready to race and I've been around the Formula 1 paddock for a long time.

"I talk to Jolyon normally, I'm not thinking 'I'm going to take your seat next year'. I'm working, not to take his seat, but to be in F1."
