As Michael van Gerwen and Phil Taylor prepare to meet for a 60th time at the World Matchplay Darts on Friday night, we take a look back at some of their best encounters of recent times...

Ahead of their clash at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool the pair have already met three times in 2017, with Mighty Mike having a 2-1 winning record over The Power.

Van Gerwen won their first meeting 7-4 in this season's Premier League in Rotterdam, but Taylor turned back the clock to win 7-3 a few weeks later in Sheffield.

It all started so well for Taylor in Rotterdam as he opened up a 3-0 lead with finishes of tops, 96 and 73, but it soon unravelled Van Gerwen took control and stormed to victory with an average of 100.50 and a 78 per cent checkout rate.

However, Taylor turned the tables on the Dutchman in Sheffield with a crushing victory, with two barnstorming checkouts of 96 and 90 on his way to the win.

A feisty quarter-final at the Shanghai Masters earlier this month also went Van Gerwen's way as he edged out Taylor 8-7.

Overall, Taylor holds a winning record over Van Gerwen, having come out on top in 32 of their 59 meetings so far, with 25 triumphs for Mighty Mike and two draws.

The pair have also met in two of the last three World Matchplay finals, with Van Gerwen cruising to victory 18-10 last year and Taylor winning 18-9 in 2014 - his 15th and most recent win in the competition.

In what was billed as a blockbuster showpiece between the two arch enemies, Taylor saw his challenge to capture a 16th crown come to a shuddering halt as Van Gerwen averaged 103.60, landing 32 ton-pluses, hitting 12 140s and 180s with a 61 per cent success rate on the doubles.

However, in 2014 it was all Taylor as he averaged 107.19 on his way to victory over the Dutchman.

Taylor did turn on the power to stun MVG in their last meeting, which came in Sheffield on Week 14 of the Premier League
