Watch how the drama unfolded on week five of the Premier League Darts in Exeter

Dave Chisnall recorded two wins in Exeter but, in the absence of Michael van Gerwen, it was Phil Taylor who went top of the table.

With the world No 1 sidelined due to a back injury, the Premier League's finest rose to the task of filling the void and none more so than Chisnall who won both of his matches to move off the foot of the table and into play-off contention.

Taylor took maximum advantage, winning the final two legs to rescue a draw against Gary Anderson in a classic that saw him secure a point to end the night top of the table after James Wade failed to get the required win against 'Chizzy'.

But the showstopper came from 'Snakebite' Peter Wright who clocked up the second highest average in the Premier League, his 119.50 underpinning a sensational 7-2 victory over Adrian Lewis at the Westpoint Arena.

Night Five - as it happened

Recap of our blog from across the evening in Exeter

Chisnall came into the night rock bottom but kicked off the evening with a fantastic display to dispatch Raymond van Barneveld and claim his second win of the 2017 season and set the tone for a thrilling night of tungsten.

Averaging more than a 100 and hitting 64 per cent of his doubles, 'Chizzy' was too strong for an out-of-sorts Barneveld - the man from St Helens almost clinching the match with a nine-dart finish.

Chisnall pinned seven perfect darts in the final leg of the match but it wasn't to be the perfect leg. He mopped up in routine fashion, a tidy 52 finish sealing a 7-2 triumph that took him off the foot of the table.

In the absence of MVG, it was Wright who provided the spectacular and in this case it wasn't just the outfit and hairdo as he produced a spellbinding display to push Lewis into trouble and in danger of elimination.

'Jackpot' flew out of the traps with seven perfect darts in the opening leg, but Wright was undaunted and producing a host of big scores and clinical finishes to come in just under Van Gerwen's astonishing 123.40 average against Michael Smith last year.

Defeat means Lewis is one place outside the relegation zone, although his own average of 109, coming on the back of another three-figure score last week, shows he is playing well and there was little he could do against Wright's brilliance.

Snakebite's brilliant 125 check-out was part of his superb display

On a night of incredible quality, a repeat of the 2015 World Championship final saw Taylor and Anderson throw up another classic, trading eight breaks of throw to play out a thrilling 6-6 draw.

Anderson pinned eight maximums and an average in excess of 105 on his way to a share of the spoils while Taylor admitted afterwards that the display was his best of the Premier League season.

The point took Taylor to the top of the table and an average of 104 showed he is still capable of keeping pace with the men at the top of the rankings, although Anderson will rue missed chances, including a dart for the match as Taylor fought back from 6-4.

Taylor also had time to work the crowd on the South coast on his way to a share of the spoils.

Chisnall's opening victory meant Kim Huybrechts and Jelle Klaasen went into their match in the bottom two places and it proved to be a case of missed opportunities for both men.

The Belgian struck with a break in the first leg of the match before Klaasen hit back and the pair traded four more legs to remain level at three apiece.

Kim Huybrechts admitted he was looking for more than a point against Jelle Klaasen in Exeter

Huybrechts was the first to see his chances slip by, despite dominating the scoring and the maximums, a host of missed darts saw him miss chances for breaks in two succesive legs against the Klassen throw - double 12 proving particularly irksome.

The Dutchman managed a break of his own to secure a point and lead 6-3 but they suffered an attack of the missed doubles himself, including four missed match darts which let Huybrechts in.

The Belgian put together 12 brilliant darts in the 12th leg to reel off a third successive leg and secure a share of the spoils, although a point does neither man any favours in their battle to avoid elimination.

And in the final match of the night, Chisnall returned to get the better of James Wade in a scrappy encounter with neither man at their best.

But it was Chisnall who kept his nerve to seal a second win of the night that could prove decisive in the final analysis.
