England will be 'massively disappointed' with their batting efforts on day three of the second Test despite running into an inspired Wahab Riaz, says Sir Ian Botham.

The tourists lost their final seven wickets for a paltry 36 runs in Dubai to slip to 242 all out, Wahab tearing the heart out of the middle order to finish with figures of 4-66.

Botham questioned England's shot selection but also lavished praise on left-arm speedster Wahab, who picked up the wicket of Joe Root (88) before having Ben Stokes (4) and Jos Buttler (0) nick off.

Wahab was fantastic; he got a bit of reverse swing, maintained his pace, showed he's got stamina and picked up wickets at the right time.

"Buttler is way out of form and Stokes in an attacking player but I think when the England team look at the shots they got out to, they will realise they really brought about their own downfall," Botham told Sky Sports.

"They will be really disappointed but it's very easy to criticise the batsmen and sometime you have to give credit to the bowlers.

"Wahab was fantastic - he had plenty of encouragement but he got a bit of reverse swing, maintained his pace, showed he's got stamina and picked up wickets at the right time.

"He's a match winner and when you get a bowler bowling a little bit quicker than the norm, batsmen start doing strange things."

Yasir Shah also claimed four England wickets, backing up his dismissal of Alastair Cook on the evening of day two by removing Yorkshire pair Jonny Bairstow (46) and Adil Rashid (0) and Durham quick Mark Wood (1).

Beefy was impressed by the control of Yasir - who missed the drawn first Test in Abu Dhabi with a back injury - but believes fellow leg-spinner Rashid has a greater range of deliveries.

"Yasir bowled pretty steadily," Botham added of a bowler who has now taken 65 wickets in 11 Tests at an average of 24.72.

"Rashid will have been watching with interest as Yasir's stock delivery is a bit quicker than his, but Rashid has more variation."

Rashid ended day three with figures of 0-70 from 17 overs as Pakistan extended their lead to 358, captain Misbah-ul-Haq (87no) and Younus Khan (71no) making England toil in the final session.
