Psychological blow dealt to Pakistan, says Ian Botham

Sir Ian Botham says England's long vigil with the bat will have dealt some psychological blows to Pakistan as they kept them in the field for a second straight day.

Alastair Cook's scored a sensational 263 - an innings which Botham hailed as a masterclass at the end of day three - but reserved praise for Cook's partners at the other end on day four, particularly Ben Stokes, who hit 57 as England reached stumps on 569-8, leading by 46.

"There have been big partnerships all the way through the innings, and we've talked about how big partnerships win matches," said Botham. "The game will likely end in a draw but England are the side who come out of this game with a win on points even if it does end that way.

"Psychologically it is a massive blow for Pakistan. With 523 on the board they're maybe thinking we can bowl them out, have maybe a 100, 150-run lead, bat on and then put England under pressure.

"But it is the other way round. It has shown that England are up for the fight.

"I thought Ben Stokes played with great control. You could see him dragging it back - he wanted to hit the ball out of the ground, but he managed to restrain himself and bat for the captain.

"He had a tough start against Wahab Riaz who was reversing it, but he hung in there.

"Wahab bowled very well, but he has had to bowl 33 overs, and that takes its toll in these conditions.

"Again, England have done a good job there, keeping him out in the field, working. It was good to watch."

Wahab was still the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan with 3-116, but finally some wickets fell to spin in the final session of the day.

Shoaib Malik took two - including Stokes and captain Cook - and Zulfiqar Babar one, the first wickets to spin in the Test. As a result, Botham thinks England should give Adil Rashid an early bowl when they're back in the field.

"England will bat on in the morning, get another quick 60 or 70 and then look to put Pakistan under the cosh.

"I'd certainly get Rashid on quickly. There was just a hint of turn out there today.

"Let's put Rashid's first innings performance in context - he bowled on the first two days when this pitch was at its flattest. I don't think he did that badly.

"He'll play the rest of the series and only get better as it goes on. But hopefully tomorrow he'll get a first wicket that gives him just that little bit of encouragement."
