Captain AB de Villiers says South Africa are in an upbeat mood ahead of their five-match one-day international series against England, which gets underway on Wednesday.

The Proteas lost the recent Test series between the sides 2-1, having previously been heavily defeated by India over the five-day format.

However, they played well to beat India 3-2 in the one-day series and De Villiers thinks that form will prove more relevant in the coming weeks.

"We have got lots of reasons to be confident going into the series," said De Villiers. "We played some good cricket in India and had a fantastic series win there.

However, England have looked an improved side in limited overs cricket of late and De Villiers added: "I saw them winning a few games at home and playing a few good games of cricket.

"They look confident, they have got some good names in the team. No matter who we play, we have respect for the opposition, and it will be no different tomorrow."

Three South African batsman, including De Villiers, smashed centuries when they beat India by 214 runs in Mumbai to clinch the series in October.

He finished the recent Test series with three ducks in succession but is likely to prove a more formidable adversary over the shorter format.

De Villiers tops the International Cricket Council rankings for one-day batsman and also holds the record for the fastest century, having reached a hundred from just 31 balls against West Indies last year.

"I've always taken a new series, no matter where I go, as a new challenge," he added. "I'm starting from zero again in this series.

"I scored a hundred in my last ODI but even then I feel like I've got to find my feet and get myself in. Every game I play I feel like that.

"Even in the Indian Premier League, where we play 16 games in no time, no matter how good form I'm in, I feel like I need to work really hard to get in again."

England have a big-hitter of their own in the shape of Jos Buttler, who smashed a 46-ball ton against Pakistan in the autumn.

De Villiers said: "We don't have the same styles or techniques, but he definitely paces his innings in a similar kind of way to how I like to.

"He is a really good player and yes, someone to have a look at."
