Steve Smith in South Africa airport scrum before Australia return

Steve Smith had to fight his way through Johannesburg airport as he returned to Australia after the ball-tampering scandal

Steve Smith was bundled through Johannesburg airport after being sent home from Australia’s tour of South Africa following the ball-tampering scandal.

Smith, along with David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, were all dismissed by Cricket Australia for their role in the incident.

Smith and Warner have been banned from international and domestic cricket for 12 months, while Bancroft, who was caught on camera attempting to change the condition of the ball using sandpaper, has been handed a nine-month suspension.

Cricket Australia revealed on Wednesday that Warner had been responsible for the "development" of the ball-tampering in Cape Town, while Smith and Bancroft were both found guilty of "knowledge" of the plan to cheat.

On his way through the airport, Smith received a hostile reception and was surrounded by members of the media, who jostled for a good view of the former captain.
