Jason Gillespie has backed the decision to play a day-night Test match and says it is crucial the sport continues to evolve.
Australia and New Zealand will contest the first such Test in Adelaide this week, with a pink Kookaburra ball to be used after being tested as the best colour for visibility under the varying light.
The New Zealand Cricket Players' Association said earlier this year its members were "nervous" about the experiment and Gillespie admits he is not sure about the pink ball, but says it is vital these things are tried to allow the sport to stay relevant.
"I'm all for it," he told Sky Sports News HQ. "As a sport, we have to be innovative, move with the times and continually try to evolve.
"Whether the Kookaburra pink ball is the right answer I don't know, but we won't know until we try it and I think as a sport we have to do that.
"The game of Test cricket has evolved with underarm bowling, timeless Tests, uncovered pitches and we use different balls around the world, so I see this as another evolution of our great game.
"I welcome this decision to trial day-night Tests with a pink ball because we won't know unless we try."
Australia lead the three-Test Trans-Tasman Trophy series 1-0, having won by 208 runs at The Gabba and drawing with the Black Caps in Perth.
