James Vince replaces Alex Hales in England ODI squad to face Pakistan

Ben Duckett and Dawid Malan called up for Ireland ODI and Pakistan T20I, with Alex Hales removed and Jason Roy nursing back spasm

James Vince hopes to force his way into England's World Cup plans after replacing Alex Hales in the ODI squad.

James Vince has replaced Alex Hales in England's squad for the five-match ODI series against Pakistan.

Hales has been withdrawn from all of England's white-ball squads, including their provisional 15 for this summer's World Cup, following a reported 21-day ban for recreational drug use.

Hampshire captain Vince, who struck 190 for his county against Gloucestershire in the Royal London One-Day Cup on Friday, has taken Hales' spot for the 50-over fixtures against Pakistan and will now be looking to add to his six ODI appearances to date.

"I am obviously really pleased to be back in the fold and hopefully I can push my case ahead of the World Cup," said Vince, whose last ODI came against India at Headingley in July 2018.

"I have not really been part of an ODI squad in England so if I do get a run hopefully I can capitalise on that and show what I can do.

"[Hales] must be going through a fair amount. He has made a mistake and acknowledged that. I am good friends with him and hopefully he is all right."

Middlesex's Dawid Malan and Nottinghamshire's Ben Duckett have been added to England's squad for the ODI against Ireland at Malahide on Friday and the T20I against Pakistan at The Ageas Bowl two days later.

Vince was already a part of that party but Hales' absence and Jason Roy withdrawing with a back spasm have led to opportunities for Malan and Duckett.

Duckett could now make his first appearance for the senior England team since being sent home from the 2017/18 Ashes tour for allegedly pouring a drink over James Anderson in a Perth bar.

Roy will link up with England ahead of the ODIs against Pakistan, which begin at The Oval on Wednesday May 8.

Mark Wood will also re-join his England team-mates ahead of the Oval ODI - the seamer will miss the Ireland ODI and Pakistan T20I and instead play for his county in the One-Day Cup against Nottinghamshire on Friday and Yorkshire next Monday.

Barbados-born seamer Jofra Archer is expected to make his England debut against Ireland on Friday, having qualified to play for the country last month.
