Jonny Bairstow says England's fightback late on day one of the second Test against New Zealand has given them something to build on.

The wicketkeeper-batsman arrived at the crease with England 94-5, which became 164-7, but he ended the day unbeaten on 97 as the tourists closed on 290-8.

Bairstow will look to complete a fifth Test century on day two and was encouraged by the team's recovery in the final session in Christchurch.

"I'm really pleased," he told Sky Sports Cricket. "Obviously it didn't go to script for the first half of the day but I think the fightback and the determination that the boys showed at the back end of the day was something we can really build on."

After putting on 57 with Ben Stokes, Bairstow was left to do much of his work with the tail and he was less than effusive when asked if it was a role he enjoyed.

"It's different. It's definitely different because it's different surfaces, different bowling attacks and in different conditions you've got to play in different ways," he added.

"It's a case of gauging the situation, the scenario, and fortunately for me I've done it a few times now, sometimes you get it right, sometimes you get it wrong.

"I was pleased with the tempo of it today and I wouldn't be on what I've got now without the guys at the other end doing what they do."

Mark Wood provided more than able support in their stand of 95 for the eighth wicket with the fast bowler, making his first Test appearance since last July, hitting an invaluable 52 - his maiden half-century in Test cricket.

"The worrying thing is I've got a (Test) 50 before a five-for - so I've done that the wrong way round, haven't I?" Wood said.

"But I loved batting out there with Jonny - a lad I've played with and against since about 11 or 12 years old. I had loads of fun - I thoroughly enjoyed it.

"I get to 20, and think I'm like (Don) Bradman - and try too many shots. (But) Jonny, being a batsman, knows how to construct an innings - (whereas) at times I chanced my arm a little bit.

"I was just more disappointed I got out the last ball before the second new ball - having worked so hard - to leave Leachy on his debut going in against the new ball."
