England v Sri Lanka: Jason Roy and Sky pundits on his Oval century

Jason Roy put in a scintillating display of hitting as he lashed 162 - the second highest ODI score by an Englishman - in his side's series-sealing win over Sri Lanka at The Oval.

The Surrey star ran riot on his home track, biffing 13 fours and three sixes, before falling five runs short of Robin Smith's unbeaten 167 against Australia at Edgbaston in 1993.

But what did the man himself - whose 74-ball ton was the swiftest in ODIs at The Oval - make of his second hundred of the series, and how did his captain and the Sky Sports pundits see it?

"What a day! I have put in a lot of hard work and it is nice to see it pay off - to contribute in a winning way is special and something I will never forget, even though I was disappointed not to be there at the end. I am not out of breath but my legs were definitely feeling it!

"I think both hundreds [Roy scored 112no in England's 10-wicket win at Edgbaston on Friday] were quite special. We were in control in the first one but here we were under the pump a bit having to make seven an over. The boys in the dressing-room allow me to go out there, enjoy myself, and play the way I want to play - I've got no worries about getting out in the first over, or whatever, because I know the boys are backing me."

"Jason always seems to impress. He is making the most of his form at the minute and he cashed in with a magnificent match-winning innings. He's probably shown the experience of a player way beyond his years. Someone whispered [that he was getting close to Robin Smith's record] and I'm sure he will be pushing to beat it in future."

SIR IAN BOTHAM

"Jason was magnificent. He punched a ball through the covers on the top of the bounce early on which showed he had total faith in this surface. He has great bat speed and real confidence."

NASSER HUSSAIN

"At times in the past he has left you wanting more but perhaps watching Alex Hales get runs has made him think 'thirties aren't going to wash any more, I need to go and get big scores'. I was really impressed by his high hands and stable base, but he now needs to keep getting hundreds.

"A big tick to the selectors, too; he had a poor winter in South Africa - he was shot at the end and didn't know which end of the bat to hold - and previous selectors would have gone down a different road. They stuck with him, though, and he has been brilliant in the World T20 as well as here."

Watch England and Sri Lanka's fifth and final ODI, from Cardiff, at 10am, Saturday, Sky Sports 2.
