Mahela Jayawardena believes that England should consider moving Ben Stokes up to No 3 in their batting order ahead of their tours of India and Bangladesh this winter.

The 25-year-old all-rounder is currently out with a knee injury sustained in the first Test of the three-match Investec series with Sri Lanka, but is expected to be fit in time for the second of England's four Tests against Pakistan this summer.

Jayawardena thinks Joe Root would be England's best option at three with Nick Compton struggling for form, but with the vice-captain happy at four, the Sri Lankan argues that bumping Stokes up from No 6 could be the way to go.

"Ideally, it would be Root [at No 3] but he likes to bat at four," Jayawardena told Sky Sports. "I can understand that with the conditions in England and the ball doing a bit early.

"If he's happy there and scoring runs then why would you want to change that against his wishes?

"I like the idea of putting Ben Stokes up at three - he can get the winter and come in and play some shots when the ball is harder in the sub-continent against slower bowlers."

Promoting Stokes has the added benefit of enabling England to bring in a second spinner to play on the turning tracks of the sub-continent, according to Jayawardena.

"It also gives you balance in the team, you could bring someone else into the middle-order and play the extra spinner because you still have Stokes as a bowling option," he said.

"It is purely on a tactical basis, it's probably not a permanent solution but he bats well in good conditions so he could be your No 3 going forward."
