Alastair Cook took a nasty blow to the knee during the third day of the third Test against Sri Lanka

England captain Alastair Cook has been diagnosed with bruising after being struck by the ball in the third Investec Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's.

Cook was hit by a Kusal Perera drive while fielding at silly mid-off just before lunch on the third day of the match and was sent for a precautionary x-ray.

England Cricket provided further details of the nature of the injury on Twitter, saying: "Cook has bruising to left knee, no fracture. Unlikely to bat tonight, assessed in morning."

Joe Root took over as captain in the absence of Cook, who scored 85 in England's first-innings total of 416.

Cook was making his first appearance since it was confirmed he will be given a CBE in the Queen's birthday honours list.
