Eoin Morgan blames poor start with ball for England's Centurion defeat

England captain Eoin Morgan insisted his bowlers just had an off-night as the tourists lost to South Africa by seven wickets at Centurion on Tuesday.

Joe Root's one-day international career-best 125 helped England post a decent total of 318-8 at SuperSport Park, but centuries from Quinton de Kock (135) and Hashim Amla (127), who put on 239 for the first wicket, saw the hosts ease to victory with almost four overs to spare.

England still lead the series 2-1 ahead of the penultimate match at The Wanderers on Friday and Morgan remains content with his options.

"I think we started poorly," said Morgan. "If you look back to the last game [in Port Elizabeth], we looked pretty threatening in the first 10 overs, and almost set the tone for the innings.

"Here, it was as simple as we didn't get enough balls in the right areas.

"We missed our lengths more often than not, and let two very experienced batsmen get themselves in, and they took advantage of that.

"I think we have a number of options. Today, we didn't hit our straps at all, but we've obviously got the two spinners, variation with the two left-armers and [Ben] Stokes and [Chris] Jordan, who have a bit of pace."

Chris Woakes and Test strike bowler Stuart Broad have yet to be used in the series, but may come into contention on Friday.

"I've considered tweaking it every game. So we'll consider it again, yes," added Morgan.
