For an English batsman, a century against Australia often proves to be the most defining of their career.

That may still prove to be the case for Daniel Bell-Drummond, although the 127 he cracked off 112 balls came for Kent, not England, in a 2015 tour match.

It was an innings that served notice of the 22-year-old opener's immense skill and international pedigree, in an otherwise disappointing season in first-class cricket, averaging 26.44.

"The Australia knock was brilliant for my career," said Bell-Drummond. "It has given me a huge amount of confidence, to know that I could do that against an attack of that quality, but it has also brought added pressure, with greater expectations now of me.

"It's something I've been used to for a while, as I did very well for the England Under-19s and was touted for success back then.

"I never change my mindset. My plans are to obviously one day play for England, but first I just need to try and be a lot more consistent."

Bell-Drummond's search for greater consistency is off to a good start, scoring an unbeaten 206 off 246 balls for Kent in their Championship warm-up game against Loughborough MCCU this week.

"It was great to spend some time in the middle," said Bell-Drummond. "They bowled pretty well in patches to me, and I'm pleased that even after I got to a hundred, I knew I needed to kick on from there and spend as much time as possible playing on these early season wickets.

"I didn't necessarily see this form coming. I went away with the England Lions to Dubai over the winter, learned a lot from the likes of Graham Thorpe and Andy Flower in the coaching set-up, and really enjoyed the experience, but I didn't play in any red-ball cricket over there.

CC Division Two preview

A look at the runners and riders pushing for promotion from Division Two.

"I was only involved in Twenty20 and 50-over stuff, so it has perhaps made me ultra-focussed to make the most facing some balls in a game situation and getting used to English conditions again."

Kent's first Division Two fixture of the season is away at Worcestershire on Sunday 10th April, with Bell-Drummond hoping their talented team of youngsters - aided by two quality overseas signings in South Africa seamer Kagiso Rabada, and New Zealand opener Tom Latham - can push for promotion this year.

"We always target promotion," added Bell-Drummond. "But there's no room for error now only one team gets goes up this year.

"It obviously makes it a tougher task, but all we can do is focus on our own game. We've got to be spot on right from the start of the year.

"There is a lot of talent in the dressing room; it's a young squad, but we're very confident.

"Last year was brilliant in terms of a lot of local guys getting an opportunity - I grew up through the club with many of the guys I played with - and gaining experience.

"To now be able to add that little bit of extra quality with Rabada and Latham coming in provides us with that extra little buzz as we look to push on.

"They're two world class acquisitions, adding to the competition for places in the squad. Hopefully it helps us find the consistency that we have lacked the last couple of years."
