Joe Root will not shy away from bold team selections despite heavy first Test defeat by Windies

Joe Root talks to Ian Ward after England lose by 381 runs in the first Test against the Windies

Joe Root says he will not shy away from finding inventive ways to win away from home despite admitting England's team selection for the first Test did not pay off.

The visitors opted to pick two spinners and leave out pace bowler Stuart Broad before seeing the hosts' fiery pace attack bundle them out for 77 in their first innings.

Although Adil Rashid bowled just nine overs in the second innings and finished match figures of 0-117 from 26 overs, Root said he would not shy away from picking a similar team in the future.

"We picked an attack that would take 20 wickets on that surface," he told Ian Ward. "This winter we went to Sri Lanka and we've done things very differently [by picking three spinners] to how we have in the past and we have seen it work out.

"We have been bold, made some strong selections and reaped the rewards and we did something similar here and it hasn't paid off.

"We have to be realistic when you are trying to find ways to win away from home you are going to get it wrong sometimes.

"I hold my hands up we might have got it wrong on this occasion but we shouldn't be scared of trying things and finding ways of winning where we haven't in the past."

Root was also quick to dismiss suggestions a lack of preparation time in the West Indies had left his side under prepared to play Test cricket.

Jason Holder says the disappointment of missing out on selection in Bangladesh fueled his desire to come back stronger

England arrived in the Caribbean just 12 days before the first Test and opted to play two two-day warm-up matches instead of a four-day first-class game.

"We worked extremely hard [in preparation] not just in the game but around it too," he explained.

"It would be wrong to question that side of things. There is a number of things that will get questioned when this happens [losing] but I don't think that is a reason for what has gone in in this game.

"We have to make sure we turn up to Antigua and play to our potential. The most disappointing thing from this week is we played miles away from where we are as a side. It will show strength of character to come back from that."

Watch day one of the second Test live on Sky Sports Cricket and Main Event from 1.30pm on Thursday, January 31.
