Moeen Ali ready to take sole responsibility as England spinner in first Test against Windies

England all-rounder Moeen Ali says he currently bowling the best he has in Test cricket

Moeen Ali says he is ready to be England's sole spinner in Wednesday's first Test against the Windies and feels his bowling has reached its best level in the longer format of the game.

The visitors picked three spin bowlers during their last victorious away tour in Sri Lanka during November 2018 but with the Barbados pitch known for being seamer-friendly, captain Joe Root faces a selection dilemma on the balance of the side.

Ali was dropped from the Test side in March 2018 but after working with England spin coach Saqlain Mushtaq he made a successful return to the red-ball team in the fourth Test against India in Southampton last summer, taking nine wickets in the match.

The 31-year-old, who picked up 18 scalps in Sri Lanka, says he would be happy to shoulder the task of being the side's leading spin option during the three-match series against the Windies.

"I wouldn't find it as difficult to be the only spinner in the side as I once probably did," Ali told Sky Sports.

"I've played quite a bit now and I feel like at this moment in time my bowling is at its best in terms of my control and my work with Saqlain on my mindset.

"I will happily take on that responsibility as I have done it on other occasions but I loved having the other guys (in the side) as well."

Meanwhile, Ali admitted that he was not disappointed to have dropped down the batting order once having been promoted to No 3 in the second innings in Southampton against Virat Kohli's team.

The experiment lasted for just five innings, in which he managed a high score of 50 and three single-digit scores before he returned to the lower order in the second Test against Sri Lanka at Pallekele with Jonny Bairstow taking over the No 3 position.

"If I'm bowling a lot it is difficult to bat three," Ali explained. "It is a very tough position and I feel it is for someone who can bat a long time and score big runs and I can't do that!

"I feel like I am quite important down the order, can change the momentum of the game and I like that role."
