Jonny Bairstow celebrated his first Ashes hundred with a "headbutt", while Steve Smith led Australia's fightback. Here's all you need to know from the second day of the Perth Test…

REPORT

England's bowlers were made to toil on a flat Perth track as Steve Smith led the Australia fightback on day two at the WACA, the hosts closing on 203-3.

WHAT THEY SAID

Jonny Bairstow: "The hundred, in many ways, was my favourite one. I've played in a few Ashes series so far now and to score an Ashes hundred is something you dream about as a kid. It was really good fun out there, I absolutely loved every single minute of it.

"There was a whole heap of emotions that came running through - and [the celebration where he head-butted his helmet] was a bit of light-hearted fun after everything that has gone on. That's exactly how it should be taken."

Usman Khawaja, speaking on BT Sport: "It's pretty hard to say [who is on top]. We were pleased to restrict them to 400 and it's fairly even, so tomorrow will be a big day.

"You get a lot of value for shots out here - if we can get a partnership going runs can flow very quickly. Smith has batted beautifully, so hopefully he can keep going. Marsh is also a quality player."
