Adil Rashid's superb bowling and Mark Wood's return are two huge boxes ticked for England ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy, says Sky Sports' Nasser Hussain.

Rashid claimed a career-best 5-27, a first ever ODI five-for, to help bowl Ireland out for just 126 in England's seven-wicket win in Bristol.

While Wood, in his first England outing since September due to an ankle injury, took 1-24 from his six overs.

"Wood and Rashid are the two bowlers England would have really wanted to perform today," said Hussain. "Wood to get some overs under his legs, and Rashid has always struck me as a confidence bowler.

Highlights for the first ODI between England and Ireland in Bristol

"Wood has been managed well by England, bowling a bit for Durham early season, although admitting himself that he has been bowling within himself.

"He's not quite as quick, and you watch his first over today and it's almost 'what's the fuss all about?' But he is worth the risk - there are certain x-factor cricketers that just do something different and Wood is one of them.

"As for Rashid, if that first over of his comes out well, you know he is going to have a good day.

"We've now seen him bowl brilliantly for Yorkshire in a Roses game and take two-for, and then bowl superbly today.

"In between his wickets there were no dross deliveries, no full tosses. He bowled with control, with his brain - quickly realising Ireland's batsmen weren't picking his wrong'un.

It's Rashid's ability to spin the ball both ways that Hussain sees as key to his success in white-ball cricket, though he warns that there are tougher tests ahead when the Champions Trophy starts.

"Rashid's googly is almost impossible to pick", added Hussain. "It's especially difficult with the white ball, which gets dirty easily and so you can't see that seam coming down.

"Liam Livingstone got two hundreds for England Lions in Sri Lanka this winter, so he plays spin well, and he couldn't play Rashid in that Roses match the other day. He couldn't pick his googly - it's a special delivery and we will see a lot of it this summer.

"Rashid is going to have a big role to play for England in the Champions Trophy. It's vindication for England sticking with him, as since the last World Cup he is England's leading wicket-taker.

"One concern though will be, England have just beaten an Ireland side who have played poorly, following a series win over a weak West Indies side.

"With all respect to those teams, and Rashid's bowling, but when AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli or Quinton de Kock - who will pick him - hit him off his length in the Champions Trophy, he will need to think about what he will do differently.

"That is why the South Africa three-match series after Sunday's game against Ireland becomes very important."
