Mahela Jayawardena says the best time for batsmen to use their feet to spin is early on in their spell

Mahela Jayawardena joined Shane Warne in The Zone during the third Investec Test at Lord's to give a masterclass on how to play spin.

After Warne delivered his own fascinating leg-spin demo - you can catch the show in full ON DEMAND and on Sky Go - the Sri Lankan batting supremo joined the discussion to give his tips on how to combat the threat spin poses.

MASTERING THE MIND GAMES
"With Shane Warne, it's about the mind games, he sets batsmen up. It's like a chess game, he'll change the field based on what the wicket is doing, how much spin he could get. He'd also know the batsman's strength and stay away from that. He'll make you hit to only the areas he wants you to hit. That's why it is so tough to do well against him."

CONFIDENT IN DEFENCE
"The main thing is you need to be confident, and have a good defence - so that you're not worried about the bat-pad chances, or the one going to slip. A lot of guys try to push at the ball hard, but that is the wrong way to go about it. You need soft hands, let the ball come to you, and hold that defence."

PICKING LENGTH
"You should always give yourself the option of coming forward, or going back. Get yourself into a position where you're well balanced and can go either way. I always encourage people to first come forward though, if they can, as you can always make that initial movement, pick the length, then come back."

USE YOUR FEET EARLY
"You know that a spinner wants to bowl fuller and find the right length. That's the time when you should come down and hit them. A lot of people think, 'oh no, I'll wait and see', but then by that time the spinner has found their length. If you want to use your feet, the best time is as soon as the spinner comes on. The spinner is under pressure immediately, and then might start firing down short balls."

SUCCESS SWEEPING
"The sweep is that same as any shot, you need to play it with confidence. It can't be a shot you're looking to play and just get away with. Don't reach too far for a sweep, because then you lose your balance, and you find that's when you top-edge it. Move across to the ball, get your body in line and your head over the ball and with a high backlift, chop at the ball."
