Jonny Bairstow was left stranded on 167 not out as Sri Lanka bowled England out for 416 in their first innings on day two of the third Investec Test at Lord's before hitting back to close on 162-1.
Bairstow added just 11 to his score after lunch as England lost Stuart Broad, Steven Finn and James Anderson for just 32 runs. Rangana Herath finished with 4-81 for his 36 overs, while Suranga Lakmal was the pick of the Sri Lanka seamers with 3-90.
Attention then turned to Sri Lanka's top order but Dimuth Karunaratne, who was dropped by Bairstow on 28, and Kaushal Silva saw off the opening bursts from Anderson, Broad, Finn and Chris Woakes to finish the session 30 not out and 31 not out respectively to take the tourists to 62-0.
Both openers reached 50 after tea but Karunaratne went no further; Bairstow making amends for his earlier drop to take a good catch down the legside off the bowling of Finn to break a stand of 108 for the first wicket.
That proved the only Sri Lankan wicket to fall before stumps though as the visitors made the most of the excellent batting conditions, Silva finishing on 79 with Kusal Mendis 25 not out.
Earlier in the day, Woakes notched his first Test fifty as Sri Lanka's bowlers toiled, Bairstow and the Warwickshire all-rounder ultimately adding 144 for England's seventh wicket.
