Alex Hales reflects on his upturn in batting form in Test cricket with Sky Sports' Ian Ward

Nasser Hussain described Alex Hales as "the find of the series" after the opener scored three fifties across England's 2-0 triumph over Sri Lanka.

Hales responded from a tough winter series in South Africa in which he scored 136 runs at an average of 17 by notching 86 at Headingley, 83 in Durham and 94 at Lord's.

Hussain feels the Nottinghamshire star has now cemented his place, while the Sky Cricket expert also saluted England's man of the series, Jonny Bairstow, who followed a maiden Test ton in Cape Town with two centuries against Sri Lanka.

"Hales is the find of the series," said Hussain. "There were questions after South Africa of whether he could do it in an England shirt and while he may not have got a hundred he has proved he is a Test player

"We had a feeling Bairstow was maturing but he proved he is a serious player who didn't just have a one-off series in South Africa.

"I think that not only is he very talented but that he is also quite strong mentally and determined to improve and prove people wrong."

Hales and Bairstow's success was not mirrored by Nick Compton, who seems set to be jettisoned for the series against Pakistan later this summer following a return of 51 runs at 12.75.

Hussain reckons Durham's Scott Borthwick, who has scored 574 first-class runs at 82 in 2016 and over 1,000 runs in each of the past three campaigns, will earn a call-up.

"Compton seems to implode when things don't quite go his way, so England will be looking for someone in that pivotal No 3 position," said Hussain.

"The selectors will be looking at historical averages, who players are getting their runs against, where they are getting them, and how important the runs are.

"I feel Borthwick will come in - the only way James Vince might go up there is if they bring in Jos Buttler as wicketkeeper and play Bairstow as a batsman."

England and Sri Lanka will now square off in a five-match ODI series, contests Bairstow could figure in after being brought back into the limited-overs fold for the first time since last summer.

"England are a good side with some very exciting players," added Hussain. "They play super, modern white-ball cricket under Eoin Morgan.

"Sri Lanka are a better white-ball side but they have lost Tillakaratne Dilshan [due to personal reasons] for this series, while Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena are gone, so I strongly fancy England."

Watch England and Sri Lanka's five-match ODI series live on Sky Sports, starting with the opening match, at Trent Bridge, from 1.30pm on Tuesday, June 21.
