Michael believes it was fitting that one of Australia's searing seamers - Pat Cummins - took the final wicket, with Smith's pace attack proving the difference between the two sides down under.

Athers also says defeated captain Root looked pretty glum in the post-match press conference and that with a number of senior players under-performing, including Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali - "Ali's confidence is diminishing with every game" - England will be forced into "a bit of soul-searching" over Christmas and New Year.

Bob's Ashes Verdict: Broad's a concern

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Atherton added: "If you are getting 400 in the first innings you should be in the game and not losing by an innings, so the issue is the bowling attack when there is little lateral movement.

"I wouldn't say when Trevor Bayliss was bought in as coach that the only focus was white-ball cricket but Andrew Strauss wanted someone with pedigree in one-day cricket, as that's where England were falling behind.
