Liam Smith will be a huge underdog when he takes on Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez on Saturday.

So how can he pull off a famous upset win over the Mexican favourite?

We asked The Panel of fighters and trainers what 'Beefy' could do to trouble the biggest star in the States, who has only lost to Floyd Mayweather...

Johnny Nelson

Look at Canelo's only defeat and it's clear that the slick boxing and unorthodox style of Floyd Mayweather is probably the only way to beat him. Amir Khan was getting the same sort of success until that lapse of concentration lead to him getting clipped. But if you want to fight fire with fire when you're in with Canelo, it is going to need someone like Gennady Golovkin, who can stand there and take his power.

I just don't think Liam Smith has that slick boxing style to give Alvarez masses of problems like Mayweather did, so unless he's much stronger than I think he is - and I have been hearing good things - I am not sure he can just stand there like Triple G would. The big problem is Liam's style is too similar to Alvarez's.

I think Liam is stylistically perfect to take on Canelo and hopefully beat him. Canelo likes to do things in little bursts and then take a breather because he is always tight at the weight and is always conserving energy. One thing we do know is that Liam will not stop, from the first to last bell.

'Beefy' is not a concussive one-punch knockout specialist, but he hits solid enough and he is a very good body puncher, but more importantly, is constantly on you. He always makes you work and Canelo doesn't want to do that so he has got the ideal style to upset him. I think that will beat Alvarez but we will have to wait and see.

If he can, I would like to see Liam show a similar sort of plan that Amir Khan did. He needs to be in-and-out, with fast
hands and try not to be in range when Alvarez lets his shots go.

We all know Alvarez has a big punch and what it can do when it lands, so Liam needs to take that away and the only way to do that is to be out of range, not just stand there.

I am sure it would suit Liam to go in there and meet him head-on, but I'm just not sure he hits hard enough to do that and win. We do know Liam is a good technical boxer, throws great bodyshots, but strength and power will be the major areas that will work in Alvarez's favour.

Carl Froch

The blueprint has been put down by the main man and no one can fight like - or as good - as Floyd Mayweather. It was Canelo's only defeat and Mayweather didn't take him on like even he usually takes people on.

Liam Smith will take him on because that's his way, but can he box and move because that seems to be the only way to to beat Canelo?

The trouble is that is not Liam's game; he wants wants a fight so maybe his best chance is to get up, close and personal and take him on, then hope his power can do some damage. That though, is a dangerous game.

I am a big fan of Liam Smith. I think he is very, very underrated. He tucks up so well that I think he will cause Canelo lots of problems and frustrate him at times, but I also think Canelo is a special talent.

If I was Liam, I woud do what he does best. He's got that tight guard, he doesn't leave any openings and he picks his shots well, so I think he should keep doing that.

Stick on Canelo's chest, try not to take on any unnecessary shots and ping his own round the body and to the legal side of the head. Liam just needs to try and fluster him and create openings. That's what he does well.

Canelo is a pretty solid all-round fighter. He's dangerous coming forward and equally as effective on the back foot. With someone like that, you have to catch them in two minds; make them feel like they can come forward and
then close the distance and put them on the back foot.

Then when they've gone defensive, you go for a little walk yourself. You don't want a fighter like that getting any sort of nice rhythm going.

Tony Bellew

That Mayweather blueprint is not in Liam's forte, boxing on the back foot and countering is not an option for him. He's not Mayweather and he does not possess that set of skills. But the skills he's got mean he can fight up close and do to Canelo what no one else has managed; Miguel Cotto couldn't do it, Erislandy Lara couldn't do it, neither could Alfredo Angulo.

The one think I will say is Liam will fight to the finish. He is a born fighter first and foremost, whereas his brothers are boxers first. Yes, Liam is a box-fighter and can do both but he fights better close-up in my opinion and he loves going into the trenches. I think that is what he has to do and even if Canelo hasn't under-estimated him - and I am not sure he has - he'd better be ready for the fight of his life.
