Joe Cordina is the latest British boxer to fall before the Olympic quarter-final stage as he was outpointed by fifth seed Hurshid Tojibaev.

Cordina arrived in Rio boasting a European Championship lightweight gold medal and ranked eighth in the world but was unable to match the physicality of Tojibaev, who went through 28-28 29-27 29-27 despite a point deduction.

Cordina began on the back foot and looked keen to exhibit his superior movement, keeping his hands low. Tojibaev was in no mood to allow him the chance to show off, though, and duly uncorked a solid opening left hook.

The Welshman, 24, was looking to counter-punch at every opportunity and was boxing with more success in picking several sharp jabs to catch his opponent lunging in, but the momentum swung again at the end of the session when Tojibaev landed with both hands to pinch the opener.

The second was more dramatic and began with Tojibaev hunting down his foe and attempting to drag him into some heavy exchanges. He was having success in doing just that when he was penalised for a low blow and despite struggling to match Tojibaev's physicality, Cordina was granted a share of the round on the scorecards.

The final session was more of the same as Tojibaev continued to initiate the action, and Cordina sustained a pair of decent left hooks in the first half of the round before Tojibaev stepped off, appearing content to see out the fight and take the points victory.

Cordina sensed his chance was slipping away and began to launch some more committed attacks of his own, only for Tojibaev to reply with a rapid combination to the body - leaving it no surprise when the scores were read out in the Uzbek's favour.
