Floyd Mayweather Sr doubts his unbeaten son will carry out his retirement plan after fighting Andre Berto on September 12.
Mayweather Jr can move to 49-0 if he overcomes his fellow American in Las Vegas and his father believes the chance to topple Rocky Marciano's 50-0 record will prove too tempting.
In an interview published on worldboxingnews.net, Mayweather Sr said: "Myself, I can't say that Floyd is going to fight any more but I think he might fight again. If things are right for him and people are doing what they're supposed to do, it's more than likely he's going to fight. That's my belief.
"I definitely think that it's a record that needs to be broken. I think Floyd can break it but I want to make sure he's ready. When I say ready, I mean he feels good and is ready to go. You can't be ready when you don't feel good.
"I love everything my son has done in boxing. He controlled boxing. Boxing today is all about Floyd. He controls it right now today. Nobody else. Floyd controls boxing."
Mayweather Jr, 38, clinically outpointed pound-for-pound rival Manny Pacquiao with the WBC, WBA Super and WBO welterweight titles on the line on May 2 - but Mayweather Sr has dismissed talk of a rematch and also poured cold water on the possibility of his son meeting middleweight king Gennady Golovkin at a catchweight.
He said: "I think Pacquiao was one of Floyd's easiest fights. They're talking about a rematch! Rematch who? It's just hype. That's what you do with fighters - you hype them up. You hype it up and make it look like they're going to do something.
"Pacquiao don't control nothing. They'll fight if Floyd wants him to fight but he's a dead man right now in a grave."
On Golovkin, he added: "I don't want to see Floyd do that. Floyd doesn't need to fight any guys that big. He's big enough fighting guys at 154lbs because Floyd really isn't more than a 140lb fighter."
