Gennady Golovkin will take over Floyd Mayweather's No 1 slot, warns Abel Sanchez

Check out some of Gennady Golovkin’s highlights and see why he has earned a reputation as one of the most feared fighters on the planet

Gennady Golovkin could take Floyd Mayweather's No 1 pound-for-pound spot, says his trainer Abel Sanchez.

The man behind GGG's rise believes that his middleweight knockout star could soon be the world's No 1 if Money continues to pick opponents like Andre Berto.

Sanchez is preparing Golovkin (33-0-KO30) for the WBA super-middleweight title holder's first unification showdown against Canadian puncher and IBF champion David Lemieux in October.

And while both Mayweather and his CEO Leonard Ellerbe are adamant he will walk away with a 49-0 record, Sanchez thinks he will fight on - and could be overtaken by GGG.

"The pound-for-pound rankings, which is a difficult ranking by the fight fans, I think there’s a possibility because he will have higher level opposition once beating Lemieux," he told boxing radio On The Ropes.

If Floyd doesn’t continue to impress and to fight the kinds of fights that will impress the fight fans, then yeah I think it will drop him out of the No 1 spot.

"If Mayweather continues to do these kinds of opponents like Berto - fans are forgetful. If you don’t do what they want you to do, they forget the things that you’ve done in the past.

"I think he fights again, I don’t think it’s over. I think that Mayweather is too much of a historian and too much of a businessman to think that all he wants to do is finish out and hold the record."

Lemieux (34-2-KO31) has similar punch power stats to Golovkin but Sanchez has no doubt who will come out on top.

And with another world title on the line and the chance to impress after Mayweather-Berto, his trainer is expecting the Kazakhstan knockout specialist to win - inside four rounds.

"I think that both guys at the beginning will be aware of each other," he said.

"I think by the time the second round comes around, I think Golovkin will have established his jab and will be pot-shotting Lemieux.

"In the third round, I think they have a good round between the both of them and in the fourth round Golovkin knocks him out."
