WBSS: Naoya Inoue joins Ryan Burnett in bantamweight knockout tournament

Naoya Inoue will join the World Boxing Super Series bantamweight tournament after beating Jamie McDonnell.

The 'Monster' won the WBA 'World' world title in explosive style in Tokyo, ending McDonnell's four-year reign inside the first round.

McDonnell's reign is over

Jamie McDonnell was stopped for the first time in his career at the hands of Naoya Inoue in Tokyo.

Inoue (16-0-KO14) is now a three-weight world champion but is already focused on the knockout tournament.

"I have received official offer from WBSS before this fight," he said.

"I'm looking forward to enter the tournament and I will train even harder to win the tournament."

The 25-year-old will now join former unified holder Ryan Burnett (WBA Super), Zolani Tete (WBO) and Emmanuel Rodriguez (IBF) in the 118lbs series.

The WBC version is currently vacant, with Tassana Sanpattan of Thailand and France's Nordine Oubaali, scheduled to fight on June 23.
