Vasyl Lomachenko won his New York showdown with Guillermo Rigondeaux, who retired on his stool after six rounds.

The Ukrainian dominated from the beginning and was in complete control when the Cuban pulled out, with a supposed injury to his left hand.

The expectant Madison Square Garden crowd was far from happy with the outcome as Rigondeaux joined Miguel Marriaga, Jason Sosa and Nicholas Walters in withdrawing once they had tasted Lomachenko's speed, skill and strength.

'El Chacal' blamed it on to the damage done to his left in the second round but was booed out of the ring to cap a disappointing end to what was supposed to be a dream fight, the meeting of two masters of the trade.

Both had been amateur supremos, winning back-to-back Olympic golds before turning professional and adding world titles in the paid ranks, with Lomachenko's WBO super-featherweight belt on the line.

But the fact that Rigondeaux had moved up two weight classes to challenge the Ukrainian was there for all to see, as the three-inch height, never mind the physical power, played a major part in those six rounds.

Lomachenko was expected to force the pace and test Rigondeaux's renowned defensive skills and that is what happened, one stepping in and letting combinations go, the other stepping out, ducking down, trying to stay out of range from the start.

When the pair finally met close up, Rigondeaux continually clinched and held with referee Steve Willis warning him as early as the second before eventually deducting a point in the final round.

Lomachenko was also ticked off for hitting on the back of the head but with the Cuban skillster ducking so low, the New York favourite had little choice as he was not only looking to draw him into a fight, but also entertain the sold-out Madison Square Garden.

'Hi-Tech' impressed in the third with his lightning speed and almost instinctive jab a joy to watch, while Rigondeaux's single-shot approach was never going to be enough to win on points.

One of those solitary punches in the fourth was low and slowly and sadly, the monumental occasion started to fizzle out before the disappointing finish.
