David Haye's split with Shane McGuigan did not surprise old friend George Groves

George Groves was not surprised to see David Haye split from Shane McGuigan and believes it will work well for his old friend.

The recently crowned super-middleweight world champion knows them both well and will remain with the trainer following Haye's announcement.

Groves, who has known Haye since his professional career began, believes the decision showed that the heavyweight has always been "slightly detached" from the McGuigan stable anyway.

I can see it working for David because he knows the game and knows what he's got to do. Shane is a good trainer, he's an intelligent chap and he knew what to do to get the best out of him.

"It didn't really me surprise me," Groves exclusively told Sky Sports.

"There was always that something different with David. He's always had his own team coming in - who he's known for years and worked with - before, so he was always slightly detached.

"The way him and Shane were preparing for fights was like the American style: you see a lot of Americans doing their own thing because the country is so big, then for the final few weeks they'd do camp with a particular trainer.

"It usually happens in the twilight of someone's career and I can see it working for David because he knows the game and knows what he's got to do. Shane is a good trainer, he's an intelligent chap and he knew what to do to get the best out of him."

Groves admits the only surprise was the timing of Haye's decision with the former two-weight world champion still recovering from the Achilles injury that saw him lose to Tony Bellew in March.

'Saint' is happy with the progress he has made under McGuigan, culminating in him being crowned world champion at the fourth attempt, with Haye playing his part.

"I got a lovely message from David pre-fight and straight after," said Groves.

Groves finally became world champion at the fourth attempt with an impressive sixth-round stoppage of Fedor Chudinov

"I know David's a busy man and I haven't seen him since I won but he sent some really kind words, and me and him have been detached for some years now - even when were both under Adam Booth and stable buddies.

"But he understands and empathises with me and the road we've had to go down and how tough it has been.

"It was just a lovely genuine message, saying how happy he was and how he said I deserved it, so it is nice to hear from someone I looked up to for years.

"When I turned pro he looked after me, he took me out to Miami, took me sparring and treated me really well, so I am always going to appreciate David.

"I wish him luck in the next step of his career. He looked after me and last weekend he sent a lovely message, that meant a lot to me."
