Tyrone Nurse defended his British super-lightweight title after a brutal clash with Tommy Coyle in Leeds

Tyrone Nurse racked up a points decision victory over Tommy Coyle in Leeds on Saturday night to retain his British super-lightweight title.

In a punishing fight and a classic clash of styles, the two Yorkshiremen gave it their all over 12 rounds on the undercard of Josh Warrington's fight with Irishman Patrick Hyland.

Both fighters - who are rarely ever in a dull fight - had the crowd on their feet at the final bell and it was Nurse who eventually came through to make the second successful defence of his British belt.

Hull's Coyle started the fight in his usual fashion, charging forward and pinning his Huddersfield opponent on the ropes, while Nurse looked comfortable in picking his opponent off.

The pair refused to let up as the fight quickly caught fire, constantly trading blows, and it was on Coyle's face where the punishment really started to show, his nose bloodied and eye heavily swollen in the third round.

While the taller Nurse began to find the target cleanly with some punishing shots, it was 'Boom Boom' who managed to knock his opponent to the canvas.

Coyle threw a left jab that sent his 26-year-old opponent down, although when interviewed after the fight, Nurse claimed it was just a slip.

Slip or not, the knockdown seemed to spark even more life into a rejuvenated Coyle and the Hull warrior continued to charge forward and catch Nurse.

However, Nurse was not fazed and gave as good as he got as the final minutes ticked down to end a cracking encounter.

All three judges ringside scored the fight in Nurse's favour. and he will now look to move on and win the Lonsdale belt outright.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Nurse said: "It was a cracking fight and I knew it would be tough against Coyle.

"I went down, but in all honesty it was a slip when he caught me with the jab.

"Everyone would love to win the British belt outright and I'm one win away. I will have to face my mandatory next and it will be another tough fight - they all are at this level."
