Heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder looks ahead after having surgery

Deontay Wilder had this message for Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury after having surgery on his right hand and bicep

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is recovering after having surgery on his right hand and bicep.

The 30-year-old American was injured while making a successful defence of his world title against Chris Arreola in Birmingham, Alabama earlier this month.

Wilder (37-0 KO36) maintained his unbeaten record after Arreola's corner stopped the fight at the end of the eighth.

But the champ was unable to use his fearsome right much during the latter stages of the bout and it was confirmed afterwards that he had broken the hand.

Wilder has now had surgery and posted on Twitter: "Surgery number two is done. Thanks so much to everyone for all the prayers.

"Thank you to all the great nurses and staff who took care of me."

Wilder is now turning his attention to possible future unification fights against the likes of British heavyweight champions Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury, a meeting with the former having been mooted for some time in 2017.
