Savannah Marshall eased into the last 16 of the World Championships to keep her hopes alive of qualifying for this summer's Olympics.

The pressure is on the Sky Academy Sports Scholar this week in Kazakhstan with the Hartlepool fighter needing to win three fights and reach the semi-finals to secure her spot in Brazil for Team GB.

Seventh-seeded Elena Vystropova, the Azerbaijan fighter Marshall beat to become 2012 World champion, was a stern test for her opener on Friday afternoon but the Briton showed few nerves in a ruthless performance to book her place in the next round.

Middleweight Marshall was dominant from the first bell with a series of authoritative hooks into the body as she looked to dictate proceedings in the opening round.

Vystropova settled in the second round but the 'silent assassin' continued to look busy from the centre of the ring and even saw her opponent docked a point for holding.

Celebrating her 25th birthday in style, Marshall cruised through the three-round bout and was awarded the fight with a unanimous decision.

It will be a huge relief to get the first win under her belt, with the 2014 Commonwealth champion needing two more victories to secure qualification for Brazil.

Next up on Sunday afternoon will be India's Pooja Rani, who she eased past in her first fight at the Commonwealths in Glasgow two years ago.

Marshall's GB team-mate Chantelle Cameron will continue her quest for Olympic qualification when she takes on Mira Potkonen of Finland in the lightweight division on Saturday.

Former Sky Academy Scholar Katie Taylor is also in action against Agnes Alexiusson of Sweden as the Irish star bids to bounce back from her shock loss at last month's Olympic qualifiers in Turkey and book her place in Rio.

Saturday also sees Nicola Adams - who has already qualified to defend her Olympic crown - begin her quest for her first world title as she faces Dilnozakhon Odiljonova of Uzbekistan in the flyweight division.

Rob McCracken, GB Boxing performance director said: "The World Championships is always a tough competition and the fact this is an Olympic qualifier only makes it more so.

"However, this is a talented and capable group of boxers and if they reach the standards that we know they are capable of then they will give themselves every chance of winning a medal and securing a place at Rio."
