James DeGale will make the next defence of his IBF super-middleweight title against Mexican Rogelio Medina.

The Londoner was due to face mandatory challenger Jose Uzcategui, but the Venezuelan has suffered an illness and Medina is the next eligible opponent in the IBF rankings.

DeGale retained his title with a hard-fought points win over Lucian Bute in November and had been pursuing a world title unification clash with WBC champion Badou Jack.

But his promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed that 'Chunky' must firstly overcome 'Porky' Medina before he can target the other champions in the 168lb division.

"He was due to fight Jose Uzcategui, who is now out with an illness, so he will fight Rogelio Media," Hearn told the Daily Mail.

"It will still count as a mandatory as the IBF have just gone down the list. It means he will have fulfilled that obligation so he is free to look at whatever fights he wants afterwards."

Medina has 30 stoppages in his 36 wins, but has been beaten six times, including a sixth-round stoppage defeat to Jack.
