The giant Dane was an iconic figure in Sir Alex Ferguson's trophy-laden reign at Old Trafford. One of the more vocal goalkeepers the Premier League has seen, Schmeichel left United in 1999 having won 10 major trophies with the club.
RIGHT-BACK - Gary Neville
Another key member of the Reds' rearguard, Neville joined United as a boy and spent his entire career at the club - five years of which were as captain. He is also England's most-capped right-back of all-time.
CENTRE-BACK - Rio Ferdinand
A record signing for United in 2002, Ferguson forked out around £30m to bring the classy defender to United from rivals Leeds. Another England regular, Ferdinand won six Premier League titles with the Red Devils.
CENTRE-BACK - Jaap Stam
Netherlands hard man Stam enjoyed a relatively short Manchester United spell, but every one of the three campaigns he spent at the club yielded a Premier League title. Stam left for Lazio in 2001.
LEFT-BACK - Denis Irwin
A no-nonsense full-back, Irwin arrived from Oldham in 1990 and became one of Ferguson's most reliable charges. The Irishman was used in both full-back positions and was also handy at free-kicks and penalties.
RIGHT-MIDFIELD - Cristiano Ronaldo
It was at United where Ronaldo became one of the world's most famous footballers. The Portuguese player's talent is still there for all to see at Real Madrid, who paid United around £80m for his services in 2009.
CENTRE-MIDFIELD - Roy Keane
Controversy seemed to follow the Republic of Ireland midfielder but there was no doubting his importance to United. He captained the club and when he left Old Trafford in 2005, he had helped them to 17 major trophies.
CENTRE-MIDFIELD - Paul Scholes
Arguably the most talented English player of his era, Scholes was the playmaker during United's period of domination - forming a famous partnership with Keane in the centre of the pitch.

Like Neville, Wales winger Giggs spent the entirety of his career with Manchester United. Having broken in to the first team at the age of 17, he went on to become the most decorated player in English football history.
